Safe Transportation for All Children: Training Opportunity
There will be a two-day training conducted at the IWK Health Centre in support of the safe transportation of children with special healthcare needs.
Location: IWK Health Centre, Halifax, Nova Scotia
Dates: September 20 & 21, 2019 (Friday-Saturday)
Fee: no additional fees for participants
Overview of Issue
There is a recognized ongoing needs for Canadian families to have support in accessing appropriate, specialized car transportation equipment for children with medical, physical and behavioural needs.
This situation is exacerbated because wheelchair accessible vehicle funding has been reduced across Canada. This leaves families in the position of requiring adaptive car seats, booster seats and harnesses for longer.
Why is this important:
Injuries related to motor vehicle collisions are the leading cause of injury-related death for Canadian children. The families in your practice need additional support to transport their children safely.
About this course:
“Safe Travel for All Children: Transporting Children with Special Healthcare Needs” is designed to serve as an enrichment training for Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPSTs). This initiative is specifically intended for occupational therapists or physiotherapists, or medical equipment vendors, or other healthcare staff who directly support the safe positioning and transportation needs of children and youth as part of their role.
The two-day training combines classroom lectures and discussions with hands-on exercises including interactions with families. Participants will be introduced to medical conditions that can affect restraint selection and have the opportunity to investigate and install specialized restraint systems. The training includes a written exam and proficiency check-offs that evaluate the student’s ability to assess appropriate restraints and to demonstrate proper selection, use and installation.
This training will be co-taught by a team of the following:
– Katherine Hutka (Child Safety Link, IWK Health Centre)
– Julia Gates (OT specialty seating, IWK Health Centre)
– Krista Fraser (OT Paediatric Neuro-Motor Team, Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation)
– Jason Skinner (OT – National Center for the Safe Transportation of Children with Special Healthcare Needs in Indiana)
There are only 10 spaces available for participants in Atlantic Canada for this training. An additional 5 spaces are available for those outside of Atlantic Canada. The application form can be found here.
We will notify the first round of successful applicants on or before June 30th.
Priority will be given to those who have:
- Employment in a hospital, healthcare centre, rehabilitation centre, or other organization as an occupational therapist or physiotherapist, or a medical equipment vendor, who directly supports the safe transportation of children and youth as part of their role.
- Current Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) certification at time of STAC training
If you are not currently certified as a CPST you may apply for STAC training, and note that you are registered in CPSAC CPST training course. Please note there will be availability reserved in the CPST training scheduled for Sept 17-19 that immediately precedes STAC training in Halifax.
